If there is one game or more specifically one modification that took the PC gaming world by storm it's Counter-Strike. When the two creators put this infamous modification together, little did they know it will bring them superstardom in the gaming world and become the most popular multiplayer game ever made. Half-Life owes a lot to Counter-Strike, but ever since its release, developers have been coming up with new ways to enhance the team play factor of games. With Joint Operations, this is exactly what Novalogic have done. Imagine 150 players in one single map, fighting over a few points with some of the latest technology in military terms. This is exactly what Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising does. It's not be a world beater but it will raise a few eyebrows.

Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising is a multiplayer game. That means that there's no single player option at all. Well, that's besides the tutorial, if you wanted to be exceptionally picky. The disappointing aspect of this is that the tutorial is actually quite enjoyable to play and shows what Novalogic could have done with a single player option had they put the time and effort into it.

Joint Operations: Typhoon is set in Indonesia in a fight between Indonesian Rebels and Allied forces of many different nations. The region is a war zone and each side has some of the latest technology to play around with. If you have played some of the more recent titles in this vein, then you will find the ability to use missiles and machine guns a *******ing change from having to put up with old, outdated material that may be historically accurate, but not exactly fun to use. The game dumps you and up to one hundred and forty nine other gamers into a map, gives you the weaponry and says go to war. Sounds workable in theory -- but in practice it has a few problems.

The main game mode featured is a conquest style game where the aim is for one side to dominate the whole map. The points are neutral until captured and to capture them the enemy must invade, destroy the base and then rebuild their own. So every time, ammunition must be wasted destroying a base just so you can build it again. It makes no sense, especially when you run out of ammo and the enemy decides to sweep in again. Other modes include King of the Hill which is very much an assault style of play from Unreal Tournament and should you so desire, deathmatch can be enabled.

Novalogic has always focused on realism in their games and Joint Operations is no different. One or two bullets can be enough to kill your character and considering the size of the maps, and how far you may have traveled, this can become quite frustrating. Also often you won't see where exactly you are being shot from. Running around in full view will get you shot quickly and most of the time you won't have an opportunity to react. To combat this the game provides three levels of movement ability; stand, crouch and crawl. However in many ways this only increases the problem because seeing a prone sniper is nigh on impossible.

This realism factor doesn't always shine through however especially with the vehicles. Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising contains a wide variety of vehicles to pilot, but also lacks staple units such as tanks. In the game players will find jeeps, armored personal carriers and a huge variety of helicopters to choose from. The helicopters are an impressive aspect of the game due to their usability. They are extremely easy to fly and considering the larger ones such as the Chinook can be used to move land vehicles, become a key aspect to the combat. Each of the two sides has different vehicles, but the developers have balanced this well and no one side seems to have an advantage over the other.

When everything is in place Joint Operations is truly unmatched. Having two teams with players working together, a full server and a really close battle really shows just how great the game can be. Unfortunately as is the nature with online play you can't control who you play with and chances are most of the time you will be playing with people out to have fun rather then play in a tactical manner to defeat the enemy.

There are three main aspects to the game which can be identified as the main weaknesses; the lack of single player, the maps without helicopters, and the player numbers. Although we have already bemoaned the lack of single player, it really does hurt the value of the game. Chances are in twelve months it will be long forgotten and even though single player in other titles of this nature isn't great, at least they allow you to play by yourself if needed. Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising doesn't allow this and therefore the value of the game relies highly on it remaining popular for a great deal of time, something we don't see happening with Counter-Strike Source on the way.

The other problems stem from the map design. The maps without helicopters are just plain boring at times. This is due to the fact that moving from one area to another is rather slow, even in land vehicles. Novalogic has obviously included them to mix up the gameplay but instead they detract from it. Also the fact that the game can hold 150 players in a server means that you need a great deal of players in one server to get a decent game going. Considering at the time of writing there wasn't many Australian based servers to be found, this could become a major issue.

The maps featured are quite varied and offer some decent graphics but the game does require a fairly recent PC to play. If you have anything less then broadband then you should forget it. Likewise, if you don't have a decent graphics card you should leave Joint Operations on the shelf. These two issues in the long run will contribute to the lack of players problem. Novalogic have tried something hugely ambitious and while the game does look pretty for those with the hardware, it may keep a lot of players from experiencing it. One nice touch is the ability to choose from a variety of classes and soldiers from each country, including Australia and Britain. The characters look and voice acting is different depending on what you choose making it easy to distinguish them on the battlefield.

Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising is a decent game which is unfortunately let down by a few potential problems. To have a stable gaming experience with this number of players (we didn't play in a server with 150 players, with 64 being the maximum Australian server found) is quite an achievement for Novalogic but because of the lack of single player campaign and the numbers required for a decent match, then you're definitely taking a long term value-for-money risk when purchasing the title which is a great shame indeed.
